ChatGPT Pro: doppeltes Kontingent für Work und Codex, ab Dezember ein gemeinsames BudgetChatGPT Pro: double the allowance for Work and Codex, one shared budget from December

Was genau gilt, was OpenAI offenlässt und was du vorher einstellen solltest.OpenAI doubles the Work and Codex allowance on Pro 100 and Pro 500 and merges ChatGPT and Codex usage from December. What exactly applies, what OpenAI leaves open and what to set up beforehand.

Was seit dem 29. Oktober gilt

Quelle: OpenAI-Hilfe „About ChatGPT Pro tiers“, abgerufen am 2. November 2026.

Vier Schritte in rund zehn Wochen.

  1. 29. Sep

  3. Kommende Wochen

Entscheidungshilfe

Drei Fragen, eine Empfehlung.

Dein Plan

Was du vor allem nutzt

  • Miss deinen Verbrauch jetzt.

Wie du Work im Alltag einrichtest, zeigt ChatGPT Work einrichten.

OpenAI has sent Pro customers an email with the subject line “More usage and easier work”. I got it too. The first part reads like a gift: from 29 October, the allowance for Work and Codex is meant to be twice what it was. That does not hold for every Pro plan.

The second part changes more. ChatGPT and Codex will draw from one shared allowance, measured in tokens. In my setup Codex reviews the code Claude Code writes, and from December that review shares a budget with every chat answer from an advanced model. To me that is the bigger news.

the core in three sentences

Since 29 October 2026, Pro 100 and Pro 500 have twice the allowance for Work and Codex, on Pro 200 only the lower allowance doubles, and Plus stays the same. According to OpenAI’s help center, Plus, Pro and Business will share one allowance for ChatGPT and Codex from December, billed by tokens. Instant chats do not count, heavy models count far more.

What has applied since 29 October

The email talks about a doubled allowance on the Pro plan. OpenAI’s help page is more precise, and the difference matters most on Pro 200. OpenAI announced a cut there on 29 September and has now withdrawn it. If you had the higher allowance, you keep it. If you had the lower one, it doubles and now matches.

From 29 October 2026

Same prices. Double only applies to two of the three Pro plans for certain.

  • Plus

    $20 / month

    No change

Work and Codex usage stays as it was.

  • Pro 100

    $100 / month

    Doubled

Twice the previous Work and Codex allowance.

  • Pro 200

    $200 / month

    Depends on the account

Only the lower allowance doubled. The higher one stays, the announced cut is off.

  • Pro 500

    $500 / month

    Doubled

Twice the previous allowance, and the only Pro plan with Ultrafast.

Existing subscribers get the new allowance automatically, without waiting for renewal. The weekly GPT-6 Pro message limits in Chat are separate: Pro 100 and Pro 500 keep theirs, on Pro 200 the lower one now matches the higher one.

Source: OpenAI Help Center “About ChatGPT Pro tiers”, retrieved 2 November 2026. Absolute allowances are not published.

Prices stay the same and you do not need to do anything. OpenAI qualifies the promise itself: a larger allowance does not guarantee twice as many completed tasks, because usage depends on the model, the task and your settings. It gives no absolute numbers either. So only your own usage shows whether the increase reaches you.

The email to Pro customers does not mention Business Premium. Thibault Sottiaux of OpenAI named that tier as well on X on 29 October, without details. If you use Business, check this in your own workspace.

One shared allowance from December

The email says “in the coming weeks”. The help page is more specific: from December, Plus, Pro and Business share one allowance for ChatGPT and Codex. The principle is not entirely new. On Plus and Pro, Work, Codex, Excel and PowerPoint can already draw from the same agentic allowance, where those features are available on your plan. What joins them is chat with the advanced models.

Plus, Pro and Business

In December, two counters become one. Instant stays outside.

You will find your balance under Settings › Usage, together with the reset times. When it runs out, you wait for the reset, change your plan or buy credits. OpenAI expects most users will not have to wait more often than they do now. That is an expectation, and only December can test it.

Chat and Work merge, in a test first

In parallel, OpenAI is testing an interface that combines the Chat and Work tabs. You think an idea through in chat and then have ChatGPT carry it out directly, such as a website or a presentation, with your files and plugins. A small group gets it first, and their feedback decides on the wider rollout. There is no date for that.

One point matters for developers: Codex keeps its own area in the ChatGPT desktop app. Only the budget becomes shared.

Why your model now decides your budget

Tokens are the units a model reads and writes. They include your prompt, files, chat history, tool results and the answer. The gaps between models are large, as OpenAI’s table for credit billing shows.

Standard speed

GPT-6 Astra costs 100 times as much per token as GPT-6 Luna.

  • GPT-6 Astra1,250
  • GPT-6.1 Sol250
  • GPT-6 Sol250
  • GPT-6.1 Terra125
  • GPT-6 Luna12.5

These rates apply to credit billing. OpenAI says credit prices alone do not determine included subscription usage, and it has published no conversion for December.

Source: learn.chatgpt.com/docs/pricing, retrieved 2 November 2026.

Speed comes on top. Fast uses your included allowance 2.5 times as quickly as Standard, Ultrafast on GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol 8 times as quickly. Image generation uses it 3 to 5 times as quickly on average as a similar turn without an image. A Pro 500 customer who runs everything on Ultrafast is therefore worse off with a doubled allowance than one on Standard who never got a doubling at all.

On 30 October Anthropic moved a different dial and removed the five-hour limit for verified accounts on Claude Ultra. The details are in my article on the end of the five-hour limit. Both providers now measure longer periods or actual consumption and brake less through short windows. According to OpenAI, Pro currently has no five-hour limit in Codex either, though weekly limits may apply.

What OpenAI has not said yet

Four details are missing, and each one can change your calculation.

  • The day. The help page only says December.
  • The size. No plan has a number, and it is not stated whether October’s doubling carries into the new allowance.
  • The conversion. How chat tokens and Codex tokens count against each other is not published. According to OpenAI, the credit table does not alone determine the included allowance.
  • Dots. Sottiaux wrote on X that dot usage stays separate for now. Nothing is fixed for December.

How it fits together

Four steps in about ten weeks.

  1. 29 Sep
    Cut announced

OpenAI emails Pro 200 subscribers about a reduced Work and Codex allowance.

  2. 29 Oct
    Cut cancelled, usage doubled

Pro 100 and Pro 500 get twice their allowance, the lower Pro 200 allowance doubles as well.

  3. Weeks ahead
Chat and Work merge in a test

A small group of users tests one combined experience. Codex stays a separate area in the desktop app.

  4. December
    One shared allowance

Plus, Pro and Business share one token-based allowance across ChatGPT and Codex. OpenAI names no exact date.

Sources: OpenAI Help Center “About ChatGPT Pro tiers” and “Understanding ChatGPT and Codex usage limits”; OpenAI customer email; retrieved 2 November 2026.

What this means for you

If you only chat, you will notice little. If you max out chat and Codex on the same plan, you will have to weigh one against the other.

Decision helper

Three questions, one recommendation.

Your plan

What you mostly use

Mostly the heaviest models?

Fine until December

On Pro 100, Pro 500 or the formerly lower Pro 200 allowance you now have more room, the higher Pro 200 allowance stays the same. From December, check whether your chat noticeably cuts into the allowance for agents.

My own assessment, based on the sources listed at the end of this article.

What I would set up before December

  • Measure your usage now. Check the usage dashboard every week or two, and /status shows what is left in the Codex CLI. Without this baseline you cannot judge in December whether the shared allowance is enough for you.
  • Set a default model. Routine work runs on a small model, and you pick the heavy one on purpose. On Plus, the estimate for GPT-6 Luna goes up to 3,000 messages in five hours, for GPT-6 Astra up to 45.
  • Do not leave Fast on. Paying 2.5 times makes sense when you are really waiting for the result. In an overnight run it gains nothing.
  • Keep context small. OpenAI names the levers itself: a smaller AGENTS.md, fewer sources, and MCP servers active only when you need them. Every active server adds context to every message.
  • Agree on rules in your team. Write down which model is for which task, and decide who may buy more credits.

If you hit the limit in the middle of a run, OpenAI says the agent may still finish the current turn, subject to fair use limits. Even so, an automation should never rely on a subscription allowance. An API key is the clean route for those workflows, more on that in OpenAI API tiers: Build, Launch and Grow. For setting up Work day to day, see setting up ChatGPT Work.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really get double the allowance as a Pro customer?

On Pro 100 and Pro 500, yes. On Pro 200 only the lower allowance doubles, the higher one stays the same and the announced cut is off. Existing customers get the change automatically.

Does anything change on Plus?

Not on 29 October, the allowance for Work and Codex stays. From December, however, Plus is part of the shared allowance for ChatGPT and Codex.

When does the shared allowance start?

According to OpenAI’s help center, from December 2026. There is no exact day yet. The email says in the coming weeks.

Does every chat count against the allowance?

No. Instant is included without limit on your plan and does not count. Chats with advanced models count, and the heavier the model and task, the more they use.

Where do I see my usage?

In future under Settings › Usage, which shows your remaining allowance and reset time. For Codex there is already the usage dashboard and, in the CLI, the /status command.

What happens when the allowance runs out?

You wait for the reset, change your plan or buy credits for the supported features. Instant still does not count against the allowance. Asking support for a reset does not help: according to OpenAI, it cannot reset limits.

Sources and status

Status: 2 November 2026. OpenAI has given neither a day nor sizes for December, so check the current help page before you decide.
