„Your 5-hour limit has been removed“: was Claude Ultra wirklich ändert“Your 5-hour limit has been removed”: what Claude Ultra really changes

Since 30 October 2026 Max 20x is called Ultra, and verified accounts lose the five-hour limit. I show what changes, what stays, how to tell whether it affects you, and when Ultra pays off.

Your 5-hour limit has been removed“.

Was am 30.

Your 5-hour limit has been removed“.

Bild: KI-generiert.

Was bleibt: das Wochenlimit

/usage

Current session40% used
Current week (all models)31% used
Current week (Fable)18% used

Im Browser: Settings › Usage. In Claude Code: /usage.

Achtzehn Monate, sechs Eingriffe an denselben zwei Uhren.

  1. Apr 2025
    Max startet

100 und 200 $ im Monat. Der große Plan kennt nur ein 5-Stunden-Limit, mit 20x Pro.

  2. Aug 2025

Angekündigt am 28. Juli, gültig ab 28. August. Max 20x bekommt ein Wochenlimit von 10x Pro.

Was ich Teams jetzt rate

Was bedeutet die Mail „Your 5-hour limit has been removed“?

On 30 October 2026 many Anthropic customers received an email with a subject line Claude Code users had been waiting for: “Your 5-hour limit has been removed”. If you got it, you now work without the rolling five-hour window. Your session no longer stops halfway through a refactor just because the window is empty.

The email does not apply to everyone, though. It only concerns the plan that was called Max 20x until two days ago and is now called Ultra, and within it only accounts Anthropic has verified. The weekly limit stays. This article shows exactly what changed, how to tell whether it affects you, and when moving to Ultra pays off.

the core in three sentences

Since 30 October 2026 Max 20x is called Ultra, still costs $200 a month and has no five-hour limit for verified accounts. What mainly counts are the weekly limits: 10x Pro across all models and a separate weekly limit for Fable. You can see whether your account is verified under Settings › Usage: if the “Current session” bar is missing, the limit is gone.

What happened on 30 October

Anthropic did two things at once. First, it renamed the subscriptions. The $100 plan is now simply Max, the $200 plan is Ultra. According to the email to existing customers, price, features, billing date and weekly limit stay the same. If you had Max 20x, you are now an Ultra customer automatically.

Second, Ultra loses the five-hour limit. Anthropic rolls this out in stages, starting with most existing subscribers. Newer accounts keep a temporary limit until they are verified. The Claude Help Center gives the reason: protection against fraud and abuse. Once you are cleared, you get a second email, the one saying “Your 5-hour limit has been removed”.

The rename also clears up an old misunderstanding. “20x” only ever referred to the five-hour window. When Anthropic introduced weekly limits in August 2025, it set the weekly limit for Max 20x at ten times Pro. Many customers never noticed. The product lead for Claude subscriptions apologised on X for the confusion.

A working day without the forced break

The five-hour window starts with your first message and resets in full five hours later. In chat you rarely notice. In Claude Code you do: an agent that reads a large codebase, runs tests and hunts bugs uses up in two hours what was meant for five. Then you sit in the middle of debugging and wait, although your weekly budget has plenty left.

One working day, example

The forced break disappears. You plan with the weekly budget.

  • working with Claude Code
  • 5-hour limit reached, waiting for reset

5 of 10 hours with Claude Code. The rest of the day you wait for the reset.

Illustration: how fast a window empties depends on model, context length and file size. The weekly limit (10x Pro) stays in place.

Ultra closes exactly this gap. Long runs, such as a migration across many files or a review with several parallel agents, go through. You no longer plan in five-hour blocks but in weeks.

A man works in the evening at a desk with laptop and monitor, an empty weekly planner with seven columns on the wall
Planning now happens in weeks, not in five-hour blocks. Image: AI-generated.

What stays: the weekly limit

Ultra is not a flat rate. Two weekly limits still apply, and according to the Help Center Anthropic may add further limits to manage capacity:

  • One weekly limit across all models, ten times Pro. Max sits at five times.
  • A separate weekly limit for Fable, the top model. Fable may use up to half of the weekly limit.

The weekly limit resets at a fixed time assigned to your account. It does not depend on when you started. You find it under Settings › Usage. What you use in the browser, the desktop app and Claude Code counts towards the same budget.

When the weekly budget is empty, you wait for the reset or turn on usage credits. Then work continues and is billed at API rates. If your account has a limit reset, it refills the weekly limit once. That is the real lever Ultra moves. Before, the short window held you back; now you decide whether to pay or pause at the end of the week.

How to tell whether it affects you

There is no verify button. Anthropic checks Ultra accounts automatically using account and payment history. According to user reports, phone verification at checkout is not enough. Checking is simple: open Settings › Usage in the browser or type /usage in Claude Code.

Check it yourself

No “Current session” bar means: your account is verified.

/usage

Current session40% used
Current week (all models)31% used
Current week (Fable)18% used

In the browser: Settings › Usage. In Claude Code: /usage. Only this view reliably shows your verification status. Values shown are examples.

If you use a custom status line in Claude Code, you see the change there too. The JSON contains two fields: rate_limits.five_hour and rate_limits.seven_day, each with used_percentage and resets_at. For a verified Ultra account, five_hour is missing. According to the docs the field can also be missing for other reasons, for instance before the first response of a session. So build your display to simply hide a missing window. Only Settings › Usage reliably tells you whether your account is verified.

How we got here

The five-hour limit was never stable. In 18 months Anthropic turned the two clocks six times, sometimes stricter, mostly more generous.

How we got here

Eighteen months, six changes to the same two clocks.

  1. Apr 2025
    Max launches

$100 and $200 per month. The top plan only has a five-hour limit, at 20x Pro.

  2. Aug 2025
    Weekly limits arrive

Announced on 28 July, in force from 28 August. Max 20x gets a weekly limit of 10x Pro.

  3. Mar 2026
    Peak hours

On weekday mornings (Pacific time) the five-hour window empties faster.

  4. May 2026
    Doubled

Claude Code's five-hour limits double for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise; the peak-hour reduction ends.

  5. Sep 2026
    +25 % per week

From 14 September, standard weekly limits in Claude Code sit permanently 25 percent above the old baseline. Against the temporary boost before, that is about 17 percent less.

  6. 30 Oct
    Ultra

Max 20x becomes Ultra. The five-hour limit falls for verified accounts, in stages.

Sources: anthropic.com/news/higher-limits-spacex; Claude Help Center; announcements by Anthropic on X; The Register, 26 March 2026; BleepingComputer, August 2026; timeline compiled by vanja.io/claude-ultra, retrieved 1 November 2026.

The direction is clear: Anthropic increasingly manages capacity over the week rather than over short windows. For teams that use Claude Code in production, that is the easier figure to plan with.

Is Ultra worth it for you?

Ultra costs $100 more than Max. For that you get no five-hour limit, twice the weekly budget and $200 instead of $100 in API credits for the Claude Platform. The API credits do not apply to interactive Claude Code. Whether it pays off depends on one question: where does Claude slow you down today?

Decision helper

Three questions, one recommendation.

Your plan today

Do you hit the 5-hour limit?

Do you hit the weekly limit?

Ultra pays off

For $100 more the five-hour limit goes and your weekly budget doubles from 5x to 10x Pro.

Sources: claude.com/pricing; Claude Help Center “What is the Ultra plan?” and “How do usage and length limits work?”, retrieved 1 November 2026.

Team and Enterprise plans are not affected. They keep the seat models with standard and premium seats.

What I advise teams now

If you use Claude Code at work, take advantage of the change without walking into the next trap. The trap is now called the weekly limit.

  • Check every account's status. Anyone who still sees “Current session” keeps working with a window. Allow a few days for new accounts until verification is through.
  • Look at the weekly budget on Mondays. Without a forced break, a long agent run uses the budget faster than before. Do not schedule big runs for the day before the reset.
  • Use Fable deliberately. Fable may use at most half of the weekly limit. Routine work such as renaming, tests and documentation runs just as well on Opus.
  • Usage credits with a cap. Turn them on so critical work does not stall on Friday, and set a monthly limit so nobody gets surprised.

If you build your own automations on an API instead of a subscription, you plan with different limits: rate limits per minute and spend limits. How OpenAI has just reorganised them is covered in OpenAI API tiers: Build, Launch and Grow.

Frequently asked questions

What does the email “Your 5-hour limit has been removed” mean?

Your Ultra account is verified. From now on there is no rolling five-hour window. The weekly limit across all models and the separate weekly limit for Fable apply.

Does this also apply to Pro or Max?

No. Free, Pro and Max keep the five-hour limit. Max offers five times Pro, both in the window and per week.

How is my account verified?

Automatically. Anthropic checks Ultra accounts using account and payment history. You do not need to do anything and cannot trigger the check. Until then, a temporary limit applies.

How much can I use per week with Ultra?

Ten times Pro across all models. Fable may use at most half of that. How fast you reach the limit depends on the model, conversation length and file sizes.

What happens when my weekly budget is empty?

Without usage credits you wait for the reset, which happens at a fixed time per account. With usage credits work continues and is billed at API rates. If your account has a limit reset, you can use it to refill your weekly limit.

Does the rename make Max 20x worse?

No. According to Anthropic, price, features, billing date and weekly limit stay the same. The weekly limit has been ten times Pro since August 2025.
