Februar 2025.

Was du mit deiner Auswertung anfängst

Was ist KI-Kompetenz?

Most companies now use AI, yet hardly anyone knows exactly where their own team stands. According to Bitkom, 57 percent of German companies with 20 or more employees use AI, and nine in ten see themselves only at the beginning. So I built a check that shows in six minutes where you stand and which field to tackle next. It is free, and you get your results as a PDF. The check itself is in German.

Why an honest self-assessment pays off now

Germany's Federal Statistical Office asked companies why they had considered AI but not introduced it. 72 percent named a lack of knowledge. 32 percent named costs. If you want to move AI forward in your company, you start with the people who are supposed to work with it.

Destatis, ICT survey 2025

The most common brake is a lack of knowledge, far ahead of cost.

Training everyone the same way does little as long as nobody knows where the gaps are. The managing director who prepares quotes with AI every day needs something different from the colleague who has never asked a language model anything. The self-assessment makes that difference visible.

The eight fields of AI skills

The starting point is a questionnaire from my course material with six areas and 18 statements. For the check I extended it to eight fields and rewrote every statement so that it describes observable behaviour. "I understand the importance of data quality" is easy to agree with. "I know which systems hold our most important data" forces an honest answer.

  • Fundamentals. How a language model arrives at answers and why it makes convincing mistakes.
  • Practical use. Whether you use AI every week for real tasks and write good instructions. This field is new.
  • Strategic view. Where AI measurably improves something in your company and whether you buy, adapt or build.
  • Data and technology. Where your data lives, how good it is and what a project needs technically.
  • Projects and delivery. Whether you can set up a pilot with a goal, an end date and a metric.
  • Law, security and ethics. Which data may go into which tool and what the EU AI Act requires of you.
  • Leadership and change. Whether you bring sceptics along and can draw up a learning plan for the team.
  • Learning routine. Whether you have a fixed routine to keep up. This field is new too, because knowledge about AI ages quickly.

What the EU AI Act requires on AI literacy

Article 4 of the EU AI Act has applied since 2 February 2025. In its first version, providers and deployers of AI systems had to ensure a sufficient level of AI literacy among their staff. The AI Omnibus, in force since 27 July 2026, softened that duty. Companies that use AI now have to take measures that support the AI literacy of their staff. They do not have to guarantee a specific level.

Check question: Could you write down today which measures you use to support AI literacy in your team? One self-assessment per person and a learning plan based on it are a traceable start. This is an orientation, not legal advice.

The mini check: one minute, eight statements

Before you take the full check, you can get a first direction here with one statement per field. Nothing is stored.

Mini check · 8 statements · 1 minute

Where do you stand right now?

  1. Fundamentals I know why AI produces convincing but false statements.

1 does not apply · 5 fully applies

  2. Practical use I use AI every week for real work tasks.

  3. Strategic view I can name three processes where AI measurably helps us.

  4. Data & technology I know where our key data lives and how good it is.

  5. Projects & delivery I can set up an AI pilot with goal, end date and metric.

  6. Law, security & ethics I know which data I may enter into which AI tool.

  7. Leadership & change I can win over sceptics in my team.

  8. Learning routine I have a fixed routine to keep up with AI.

0 of 8 answered.

Short form of the KI-Kompetenz-Check, one statement per field. Nothing is stored.

How the full AI skills check works

You rate 24 statements, three per field, on a scale from 1 to 5. Three short questions about your role, company size and how often you use AI today make sure the recommendations fit you. Right after you submit, you see your AI skills index from 0 to 100, the score of every field and the field where you should start. For that field you get three concrete steps for the next 30 days.

IndexLevelWhat it means
85 to 100PioneerYou use AI confidently and bring others along.
70 to 84ShaperYou use AI deliberately and can start projects yourself.
50 to 69UserYou work with AI, but not yet confidently in every field.
25 to 49ExplorerYou have first experience, the foundation still has gaps.
0 to 24BeginnerYou are at the start, and a clear plan helps most here.

The starting point is always the weakest field. On a tie, the order of the fields decides, fundamentals first. If fundamentals score below 40, the results point that out even when another field is lower, because the other steps do not hold without that foundation. You download your PDF report with all answers, field scores and next steps right away, or find it later in your account under "Meine Formulare".

The key content is also available as slides, for example for a team meeting: the AI skills check as a presentation.

What to do with your results

Take on the starting field and only that one. The three steps are chosen so that they are doable in 30 days and leave a result behind, such as a one-page AI policy or a measured time saving on a recurring task. After 90 days, take the check again and compare the fields. If you lead a team, have every person take the check themselves. The comparison shows who can teach whom.

the core in three sentences

A lack of knowledge is the most common reason companies do not introduce AI, and the EU AI Act requires measures that support AI literacy. The AI skills check shows in six minutes in which of eight fields your biggest lever lies. Start there, only there, and measure again after 90 days.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI literacy?

AI literacy is the ability to use AI systems competently: to understand how they arrive at results, to use them sensibly in daily work and to assess opportunities, risks and possible harm. The check splits it into eight fields, from fundamentals to learning routine.

Does my company have to ensure AI literacy under the EU AI Act?

Yes, if it uses AI systems. Article 4 has applied since 2 February 2025. Since the AI Omnibus of 27 July 2026 it requires measures that support the AI literacy of staff instead of ensuring a specific level. The duty is weaker, but it still applies, including to small companies. This is an orientation, not legal advice.

How long does the AI skills check take and what does it cost?

The check is free and takes about six minutes. You rate 24 statements on a scale from 1 to 5. You see the results right after submitting, and the PDF report is also stored in your account.

Is a self-assessment meaningful?

It measures how confident you feel, not what you would achieve in an exam. That is exactly what makes it useful as a starting point: it shows the field where you are least sure. The statements are therefore phrased as concrete behaviour. If you hesitate, pick the lower number.

Can I use the check for my whole team?

Yes. Every person fills in the check themselves and gets their own results. In a first call we can look at the results together and derive a learning plan for the team.
